Throughout history, the privileged have sought refuge from urban sprawl and industrial decay, retreating into curated bubbles of comfort. This imagined Mask of the Midwest amplifies this tendency, with urban expansion fracturing the environment into a fragmented patchwork. The house becomes a symbol of escape, offering an idealized view of the rural - a comforting yet detached fantasy. As urbanization consumes rural spaces, these sanctuaries grow precarious, reflecting the futility of isolating from the consequences of endless expansion. Ultimately, this retreat into illusionary peace perpetuates privilege while denying the realities of a changing world.
